England batsman Rory Burns has undergone surgery on the ruptured ligament in his left ankle and will be out of action for four months, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said.
He will thus be unavailable for England’s Test tour of Sri Lanka in March.
Burns, 29, injured himself at training, on the eve of England’s second Test against South Africa. The left-hander had been in excellent form in the build-up to the game, crossing 50 four times in as many Tests, including a century against New Zealand.
While the operation on his ankle has been successful, Burns’ recovery period will stretch to four months. He is likely to make a comeback to competitive cricket in April, when he represents Surrey in the County Championship.
“The surgery took place in London on Monday afternoon. The Surrey captain is expected to be out of action for up to four months,” the ECB announced on Tuesday, 7 January. “He will miss England’s Test tour of Sri Lanka in March and is aiming to return to play with Surrey in the County Championship at the beginning of the 2020 season in April.”
England are currently playing South Africa in the second Test in Cape Town. The two teams will lock horns in two more Tests, in Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg respectively.
