The principal of a school in Millaniya, an inspector and a sergeant attached to the Millaniya police station, who were remanded on charges of assaulting several students, were granted bail today (Nov. 16), according to Ada Derana reporter.

The accused were produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Keminda Perera, who ordered to release them on two personal bails of Rs. 1 million each.

During the court proceedings, the officers of National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) told the additional magistrate that some parents of the assaulted students are reluctant to refer them to a judicial medical officer.

The case will be taken up again on January 18, 2023.

The NCPA had launched an investigation into the incident which was reported recently, in which a group of grade 5 students from a school in Millaniya were subjected to inhumane beating for supposedly stealing money from a school teacher.

Several grade 5 students from the Millaniya Primary School in Horana had been accused of stealing money from the bag of a school teacher and were punished by the school teacher and principal, and the teachers themselves handed over the students to the local police.

Parents had alleged that students were taken away by police officers who intimidated them by threatening to subject them to electric shock treatment and assaulted them while inside the police jeep, and then dropped the students back at the school.

Meanwhile, the school teacher in question and a police constable driver who were also accused over the incident were granted bail by the court on November 08.
