England hammered India by 10 wickets thanks to a brilliant display of batting by Alex Hales and Jos Buttler to reach the T20 World Cup final.

The opening duo put together the highest partnership by any England pair at a T20 World Cup with an unbeaten stand of 170 that made a mockery of a challenging-looking target of 169 in Adelaide.

Hales - only in the squad as a replacement for Jonny Bairstow after he broke his leg playing golf - made 86 and captain Buttler scored 80 as England chased down the total with four overs to spare and the skipper fittingly crushed the winning blow with a six straight down the ground.

England - who will now face Pakistan in the final on Sunday - had won the toss and opted to field, with their bowlers doing a good job of restricting India’s powerful batting line-up.

Chris Jordan took 3-43, Adil Rashid was economical and effective with 1-20 from his four overs, while Chris Woakes also grabbed a wicket.

Some powerful late hitting by Hardik Pandya (63 from 33 balls) and Virat Kohli (50 off 40) had got India to a total that appeared competitive but Buttler and Hales took the bowling apart to seal a famous win.

The 40,094-strong crowd were largely pro-India, while England were without injured duo Dawid Malan and Mark Wood, but still produced something close to a complete performance to book their place in the showpiece in Melbourne.

India: KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma (c), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant (wk), Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh

England: Alex Hales, Jos Buttler (c, wk), Phil Salt, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Chris Jordan
