Sri Lankan cricketing legend Kumar Sangakkara, who is both the Director of Cricket and Head Coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Rajasthan Royals, has commended young spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth for his short stint with the franchise.
Taking to Twitter, Sangakkara said “Viyaskanth is leaving the Rajasthan Royals bowling group today. It was such a pleasure having him with us. He bowled at the best and learnt from the best. Such an impressive talent. Hope to see him in Sri Lankan colors soon representing his country with this same smile”.
Last month, the 22-year-old leg-spinner from Jaffna was invited to join the Rajasthan Royals as a Net Bowler for the ongoing 2023 IPL tournament.
Viyaskanth became the first ever Jaffna-born cricketer to play in the Lanka Premier League, when he played for the Jaffna Stallions’ in the inaugural edition of the LPL in 2020.
After spending two years in the shadow of Wanindu Hasaranga, Viyaskanth played a crucial role in the 2022 edition of the LPL for the Jaffna Kings, where they lifted the trophy for the third consecutive time.
