The two-lane road that runs over the embankment of the Udawalawe Dam is temporarily closed starting 7:00 a.m. today (Dec.15), due to essential maintenance work.

According to Mahaweli Authority, the stretch of road will remain closed until January 15, under three phases.

As such, the stretch of road will be completely out of bounds for vehicular movement for a week until December 22. Subsequently, one lane will be kept open from December 23 - January 06.

From January 07 - 14, the stretch of road will once again be closed completely before reopening it for vehicular movement on January 15.

Mahaweli Authority has urged motorists to use the road to 13th Mile Post via Udawalawe and Embilipitiya for the time being as an alternate route.

Safari jeeps and other vehicles except for heavy vehicles are allowed during the period the stretch of road remains open. However, safari jeeps are only permitted to travel between 5 a.m. - 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
