The ambulance drivers in the Central Province have decided to go on a token strike on both Tuesday (19) and Wednesday (20).

The President of the Ambulance and Transport Drivers’ Association, Sampath Karunaratne explained that they have decided to launch this strike to protest against the transfer procedure carried out by the Central Province Governor.

Karunaratne alleged that as per the new transfer procedure approved by the Central Province Governor, several employees, despite their requests, have been transferred out of the Department of Health at the discretion of certain individuals.

“So far, our transfers have taken place only within the Health Department, as per the Establishments Code. This time, we have been transferred out of the Department of Health at the discretion of certain groups. The transfers have been carried out despite the demands of 15 senior and well-experienced employees.”

He further emphasized that if no solution is provided to this issue, they will resort to a continuous strike from January 01, 2024.

Meanwhile, the President of the Sri Lanka Telecommunication Services Union Jagath Gurusinghe mentioned that the trade unions of Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) have organized demonstrations in Colombo and several other areas across the island today (19).

He said the trade union action is launched to protest against the measures taken by the SLT’s director board headed by its Chairman to sell the entity.
