Minister of Health Ramesh Pathirana has called for a report from the Director of the Colombo National Hospital on the death of a patient, purportedly caused by the ostensible administration of high levels of carbon dioxide.
Recently, reports were rife that a patient under medical care at the Colombo National Hospital was mistakenly administered carbon dioxide instead of oxygen, leading to his death.
The 62-year-old from Nugegoda, who was admitted to the hospital for a surgery for breast cancer surgery, had been taken into the operating theatre last night (Dec.29).
Health trade unions alleged that post-surgery, the patient was mistakenly given carbon dioxide, instead of oxygen.
Speaking to Ada Derana, Dr. Rukshan Bellana, the deputy director of the hospital, said an investigation is underway. However, countering the claims of health trade union, he stated that the patient had died during the surgery.
