
A sum of Rs. 4.2 million was awarded as compensation to the family of Sub-Inspector (SI) Upul Chaminda, who was killed in a recent shooting incident in Weligama.
Accordingly, President Ranil Wickremesinghe contributed Rs. 2.5 million, while the Sri Lanka Police Department added Rs. 1.7 million to pay compensation to the family of the deceased.
The funds were handed over to the family by Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles and Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, respectively.
On 31 December 2023, Sergeant Upul Chaminda of the Colombo Crimes Division was killed while another police officer was injured after a shooting incident near a hotel in Weligama during a raid.
He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspector (SI).
