Inmate at Galle Prison succumbs to illness

An inmate of the Galle Prison has reportedly died after being hospitalized with high fever.
The 29-year-old resident of Kottawagama had died while being treated in the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
The Department of Prisons said that he had been imprisoned last December over his complicity in a robbery.
The incident came close on the heels of the deaths of two inmates at Matara Prison last week due to suspected meningitis, and hospitalization of 17 other prisoners after falling ill.
The officials of the prison department have taken steps to implement strict health measures at Matara Prison recently, following the incident.
