Petition filed against tax-defaulted distilleries

A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition has been filed before the Supreme Court against the distilleries that have defaulted on excise tax payments.
This petition has been filed by a group including social activist Sanjaya Mahawaththa seeking an order suspending the licenses issued to the tax-defaulted distilleries and to recover the overdue tax payments from the relevant companies.
The Commissioner General of the Department of Excise and its officials, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya and several others have been named as the respondents of the petition.
