
The couple arrested on suspicion of defrauding several people to the tune of of Rs. 5 billion through a pyramid scheme, have been remanded until 05 February.
The relevant order was issued by the Kahatagasdigiliya Magistrate’s Court when the case was taken up today (28 Jan.).
The 39-year-old suspect and his mistress were arrested in Pilimathalawa, Kandy, by the Illegal Assets and Property Investigation Unit on Saturday (27 Jan.).
According to police, he had been operating a pyramid-type financial institution under the name ‘TredWin Share’ in the Galenbindunuwewa area, while his mistress, with whom he had been residing within Pilimathalawa, was arrested on charges of investing the swindled funds.
Police further reported that the couple had been living a luxurious life by buying real estate and vehicles using the ill-gotten money.
