The initial stage of the Anuradhapura North Water Supply project, aimed at delivering clean drinking water to the local population, was declared open on Thursday morning (Feb.15).

President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the President of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Dr. Tanaka Akihito graced the event, at the invitation of Water Supply Minister Jeevan Thondaman.

Through the project, executed at a cost of Rs. 11,515 million, water supply facilities are constructed in Anuradhapura North where the people depend on unsafe ground water which causes dental fluorosis.

This water supply project, funded by JICA and implemented by the National Water Supply Drainage Board (NWSDB), aims to address the long-standing issue of kidney disease-afflicted regions such as Medawachchiya, Padaviya, Kebithigollewa, Horowpathana, and Kahatagasdigiliya, by ensuring access to clean drinking water.

The first phase, cantered around the Anuradhapura Maha Kanadarawa Lake, has already begun serving approximately 25,000 families across 75 village service areas within the Rambewa and Medawachchiya Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
