Motorists using expressway cautioned due to bad weather

A special announcement has been issued for motorists traveling on the expressway, due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions.

 

Accordingly, the Road Development Authority (RDB) requests motorists to maintain a maximum speed of 60km per hour when using the expressway.

 

More than 19,000 people have been affected in 07 districts including Ratnapura, Kegalle, Anuradhapura, Kandy, Galle, Kalutara and Puttalam due to heavy rainfall.

 

The number of affected families is currently reported as 4,786.

 

Further, around 32 houses have been partially damaged and 1,140 people have been directed to safe locations.

 

According to the current situation, more than 150mm of heavy rainfall is expected in the next 24 hours in the Western and North-Western provinces, says the Meteorological Department.

 

Meanwhile, Sabaragamuwa province, Galle, Matara, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Mannar districts may experience heavy rains exceeding 100mm today.

 

Due to the prevailing heavy rains, the landslide early warnings remain in effect for several localities in the 08 districts of Badulla, Colombo, Galle, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Ratnapura.
