Police have recovered a locally manufactured Mini Uzi-type automatic firearm, believed to be the first of its kind discovered in Sri Lanka, along with several other weapons hidden inside a public cemetery in Colombo.
The discovery was made based on information revealed during the interrogation of underworld figure "Mahawatte Chamara," who was recently deported to Sri Lanka from Dubai and is currently being detained by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB).
Acting on the intelligence gathered, investigators uncovered the Mini Uzi-type firearm, a foreign-manufactured pistol, a magazine and three rounds of ammunition concealed within the cemetery premises.
Police investigations have revealed that the Mini Uzi-type weapon was manufactured locally. Authorities noted that no police unit in Sri Lanka had previously recovered a firearm of this type, despite receiving intelligence in the past about its possible existence.
Investigators suspect the weapon had been used by criminal elements to intimidate rival groups.
Further investigations are being conducted by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau.
