Police have launched an investigation following a complaint regarding a fisherman who went missing while aboard a fishing vessel that departed from the Hikkaduwa Fishing Harbour.
According to Hikkaduwa Police, the vessel left the harbour yesterday (02) for a fishing expedition. The boat owner later lodged a complaint stating that one of the fishermen on board had gone missing.
The missing fisherman has been identified as a 53-year-old resident of Meetiyagoda.
A crew of six fishermen had set out on the vessel, and it was later discovered that one crew member was missing while the boat was operating around 15 nautical miles offshore.
The disappearance was noticed when the crew gathered for dinner that night and realized that one of the fishermen could not be located. The remaining crew subsequently informed the vessel owner, who then reported the incident to police.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
