Probe underway into alleged LTTE-related content circulated on social media - Police

Sri Lanka Police stated that the Jaffna Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau has launched an investigation following information received regarding the performance of songs allegedly promoting the banned LTTE organization during a musical concert held on May 31, 2026, in the Nawakkuli area within the Chavakachcheri Police Division.

Police stated that video clips related to the performance had subsequently been circulated on social media platforms.

According to police, a 24-year-old resident of Udayanagar, Kilinochchi, was arrested on June 2, 2026, for allegedly performing the songs in question.

Investigations further revealed that two songs performed by the suspect at the musical event had allegedly been edited by him and uploaded to his social media account in a manner that glorified and promoted the LTTE, police said.

Police further stated that investigators had established that the suspect intentionally modified the recordings to include content supportive of the banned organization before publishing them on social media, facilitating their wider dissemination.

According to police, the alleged conduct constitutes an offence under Section 3(G) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act No. 48 of 1979. The suspect was produced before the Chavakachcheri Magistrate’s Court on June 3, 2026, and was remanded until June 17, 2026.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Police also noted that certain social media platforms had circulated misleading reports claiming that police had prohibited the performance of songs at musical shows and entertainment events.

Issuing a clarification, police stated that such reports are false and misleading, and emphasized that the public is required to act in accordance with the Constitution of Sri Lanka and all applicable laws currently in force.
