Amber advisory issued for strong winds in several provinces

An ‘Amber’ advisory has been issued by the Department of Meteorology for strong winds of about 40-50 kmph over the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and North-central provinces and in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts, due to the active south-west monsoonal condition.

 

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can also be expected at times elsewhere in the island, the Met. Department noted.

 

The advisory, issued at 03.30 p.m. today (07) will remain in effect until 03.30 p.m. tomorrow (08).

 

According to the Met. Department, strong winds can result in damages to roof tiles and sheets, power and communication lines, breaking of tree branches and uprooting of large trees, damage to paddy crops, banana, papaya trees and orchards, damage to harbor yachts and sea water inundation in low lying areas in the near coast.

 

The general public has been urged to be vigilant regarding impending extreme weather situation.

 

For emergency assistance, the public has been requested to contact the local disaster management authorities.
