At long last, Alexander Zverev is a Grand Slam winner.
The 29-year-old German won an elusive Slam title on Sunday, defeating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 in the men’s singles final on the red clay courts at Roland-Garros.
After falling in a fourth-set tie breaker that would have won him the match, Zverev came out swinging in the fifth set and took each of the first four games to take a commanding lead over Cobolli.
He would drop just one game in the fifth and deciding set to secure the victory.
The second-seeded Zverev came into the match as a three-time Grand Slam finalist, and was considered to be one of the best players on the men’s circuit that had yet to win one of tennis’ four majors.
That all changed on Sunday in Paris, with Zverev taking advantage of a wide-open men’s draw to finally clinch a title in his fourth career Slam final.
The 2020 Olympic gold medallist took down Benjamin Bonzi, Tomas Machac, Quentin Halys, Jesper de Jong, Rafael Jodar, Jakub Mensik, and Cobolli on his way to the singles title at Roland-Garros.
