Met Dept. warns of gusty winds & rough seas; fishermen advised not to go to sea

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar will be very rough at times, the Department of Meteorology announced. 

Accordingly, naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into these sea areas, until further notice.

 

The advisory, issued at 05.30 a.m. today (08) will remain in effect for the next 24 hours.

 

According to the Met. Department, the sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu and Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota will be rough at times.  The other sea areas around the island will be fairly rough at times.  

 

Meanwhile, the wave height may increase about 2.0 – 2.5 meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.  

 

Naval and fishing communities engaging in fishing and naval activities in the aforementioned sea areas have been requested to remain vigilant in this regard.

 

The Met. Department further added that the winds will be south-westerly. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 60-70 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar.

 

Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu and Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.  

 

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
