Netflix reveals first real dog for live action Scooby Doo series

Netflix released a new teaser video on Monday, June 8, 2026, introducing the first-ever real dog to play the titular character in the upcoming live-action series "Scooby-Doo: Origins," which is scheduled to premiere in 2027.

The teaser clip reveals the live-action, floppy-eared chocolate brown Great Dane puppy wearing his iconic teal collar as he is cradled by Shaggy Rogers, played by Tanner Hagen. The footage shows the canine star from his own point of view walking through the woods toward a cabin before spotting Shaggy, who picks up the puppy and gets his face licked.

The upcoming series marks the first time in nearly six decades that a real dog has portrayed Scooby-Doo, as previous live-action theatrical and television films utilized computer-generated animals. The franchise has spent more than 50 years as a pop-culture powerhouse, spanning three theatrical films, more than a dozen animated series, and nearly 40 animated home entertainment movies since the original 1970s Hanna-Barbera animated version.

Based on the characters from the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, the modern reimagining follows the mystery-solving group of teenagers during their final summer at camp. The plot thickens when the teens become embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding the lost puppy, who may have witnessed a supernatural murder that threatens to expose all their secrets.

The main cast features Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones. Additionally, Paul Walter Hauser has joined the cast as a series regular in an undisclosed role.

According to Netflix, production on the live-action adventure officially kicked off in Atlanta in April, where a first-look photo was also shared. Showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg are helming the series.

Executive producers for the project include Josh Appelbaum, Scott Rosenberg, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman via Berlanti Productions. André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson are executive producing via Midnight Radio, while Toby Haynes serves as an executive producer and director for the premiere episode.

"Scooby-Doo: Origins" is a modern reimagining of the iconic mystery-solving group of teens and their very special dog according to the show's logline.
