Around 22.8% of Sri Lanka’s employed population is currently exposed to Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando has said.
Addressing the General Assembly of the 114th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Minister Anil Jayantha Fernando said the adoption of Generative AI is already having a significant impact on the country’s workforce.
He noted that the current global debate on AI is often framed as a struggle between technological advancement and the protection of human labour from displacement. However, he said Sri Lanka advocates a shift in this approach, viewing AI as a tool to reshape production systems and enhance productivity and shared prosperity.
According to research by Sri Lanka’s Institute of Policy Studies using ILO methodologies, approximately 22.8% of the employed population is exposed to generative AI, particularly in professional and office-based jobs traditionally considered pathways to upward mobility. He added that sectors such as agriculture, craftsmanship, and informal labour remain less exposed.
The Minister said Sri Lanka’s strategy is based on adoption, adaptation and acceleration of AI technologies, with digital transformation identified as a national priority under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
He further stated that the government is implementing a roadmap to expand the digital economy and build a digitally skilled workforce, while maintaining a focus on social justice, labour rights and decent work.
Dr. Fernando also said that an expert committee is currently conducting consultations on comprehensive labour reforms aimed at protecting workers while supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
He added that Sri Lanka, having recently faced economic and energy challenges, continues to manage its economy transparently in the interest of its people and welcomes international collaboration to ensure AI-driven growth benefits all segments of society.
