
Police have arrested three suspects in connection with separate incidents involving the theft of telecommunications cables in the Ragama and Moratuwa areas.
In the first incident, two suspects wanted over the theft of cables from telecommunication transmission towers were arrested during a raid conducted by officers of the Ragama Police Station on Friday (13).
During the operation, police also had recovered 17 grams 700 milligrams of the narcotic substance “Ice” (crystal methamphetamine) from the suspects’ possession.
Investigations revealed that the suspects had allegedly stolen and cut telecommunications cables worth approximately Rs. 922,750. Based on information obtained during questioning, police also recovered a stock of stolen cable segments.
The suspects, aged 27 and 34, are residents of Rathupaswala and Kadawatha. Further investigations are being conducted by the Ragama Police.
Meanwhile, Moratuwa Police had arrested a 51-year-old suspect wanted in connection with several property-related offences, including the theft of telephone cables.
The arrest was made on June 12 by a team of officers engaged in crime prevention duties within the Moratuwa Police Division.
Subsequent investigations uncovered the suspect’s alleged involvement in a number of offences, including the theft of telephone cables valued at around Rs. 180,000 and several housebreaking and property theft incidents.
The suspect is a resident of Rawathawatta, police said.
Acting on information revealed during questioning, police recovered a stolen television set and a quantity of copper wire believed to be linked to the offences.
Further investigations into both incidents are underway.
