Sarvajana Balaya has written to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, urging him to take immediate action regarding the deteriorating health condition of former Head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS) Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay, who is currently being detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
In its letter, the party has expressed deep concern over reports that Sallay’s health has been worsening rapidly while in custody. Sarvajana Balaya emphasized that ensuring the health and fundamental human rights of a detainee is a primary responsibility of the government.
The organization also highlighted Sallay’s service to the nation, describing him as a courageous military intelligence officer who made a significant contribution to safeguarding Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
It stated that his dedication and service to the country should not be forgotten and that he deserves to be treated with dignity and provided appropriate care.
Sarvajana Balaya called on the President to take prompt action on humanitarian grounds and in keeping with the rule of law, including addressing requests reportedly made by Sallay and his family regarding his medical condition.
The letter further warned that any adverse development concerning Sallay’s health could have serious implications not only domestically but also internationally, potentially affecting Sri Lanka’s reputation and credibility on human rights issues.
The group noted that responsibility for ensuring his well-being rests with the authorities that authorized his detention.
According to Sarvajana Balaya, urgent attention to the matter is necessary to prevent any unfortunate consequences and to uphold the country’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of individuals in custody.
