Deported drug traffickers handed over to special units for further investigation

Two organized crime suspects involved in drug trafficking, who were arrested by security authorities in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, while residing there and subsequently deported to Sri Lanka, have been handed over to the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau and the Central Crime Investigation Bureau for further investigations.

The suspects were arrested by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) upon their arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport last night (13).

It is reported that the two individuals arrested are Modara Chathura, the brother of Modara Nipuna, and a man known as Bloemendhal Sanka.

Police stated that 25-year-old Modara Chathura has been handed over to the Central Crime Investigation Bureau for further investigations.

He is also wanted in connection with several past incidents, including possession of cannabis in 2019, an assault case in 2020 in which he allegedly attacked and injured a person using a club and a sharp weapon, and an outstanding warrant issued by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court No. 04 in November 2022.

Meanwhile, the arrested suspect Bloemendhal Sanka has been handed over to the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau.

He has been previously charged in connection with a 2010 assault case, and is also a suspect in a 2015 shooting incident that resulted in the death of an individual.

Furthermore, he is alleged to have assisted in a shooting at a prison bus in Maligawatte in 2016, and was arrested with a firearm and ammunition. He is also accused in a 2018 incident involving the shooting and killing of one person and causing serious injuries to three others, police said.
