Teenage Indian batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi paid his utmost respect to Sri Lanka’s 1975 World Cup member Anura Tennekon after the tri-series fixture against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla yesterday (15).
In a video surfaced on social media, Tennekon was seen imparting advice to Sooryavanshi, who took it with grace and went on to touch the 79-year-old’s feet as a mark of respect.
Tennekon captained Sri Lanka in four ODIs, although the country lost all their matches in the inaugural 50-over World Cup. Tennekon was known for batting fearlessly against prominent bowling attacks.
After retiring from the game, the veteran became the manager of the Sri Lanka A team and was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka cricket in December 2000.
Meanwhile, Sooryavanshi was involved in a verbal spat with Sri Lanka A cricketers as the altercation almost turned physical after India A were beaten in a dramatic Super Over in Dambulla yesterday. The incident occurred after the Super Over as Sri Lanka A players reportedly sledged the 15-year-old, who was walking away but turned around to confront the player. Sooryavanshi was also seen pushing Vishen Halambage as keeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella intervened to prevent the situation from escalating.
With both India A and Sri Lanka A scoring 265, the home team scored 17 in the Super Over but the visitors weren’t able to match it.
Meanwhile, in the tri-series points table, India A are placed second, having won only one game out of three. Sri Lanka A are at top, while Afghanistan are third.
