Senior Sri Lankan cricketers have reportedly expressed regret to Indian batting star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi following yesterday’s on-field altercation involving Sri Lanka A players during the ongoing tri-series in Dambulla.
While not part of the Sri Lanka A squad involved in the match, the senior players who reached out to Sooryavanshi are understood to have existing connections with the youngster through previous IPL interactions, according to a report by Cricbuzz.
According to reports, the incident has prompted internal discussions within the Sri Lanka A setup, including whether an apology should be formally issued to the Indian team. However, it remains unclear whether any official apology has been communicated.
Sri Lanka A player Vishen Halambage is alleged to have repeatedly sledged Sooryavanshi from the first match of the series, including during India’s narrow victory on June 9, and continued the verbal exchanges in the subsequent fixture yesterday.
Tensions escalated further during the Super Over, where Halambage is said to have continued verbal remarks directed at the Indian opener.
Following the conclusion of the Super Over, Sooryavanshi and India’s Suryansh Shedge appeared to have advanced towards Halambage, prompting a brief confrontation before being restrained by Niroshan Dickwella.
The incident is believed to have been discussed within the Sri Lanka A dressing room after the match as officials assess the situation and its possible disciplinary implications.
