Vaibhav Soryavanshi could face disciplinary action for his involvement in a physical altercation during the one-day tri-series match against Sri Lanka A.
The match referee has reportedly recommended fines, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to decide on the matter.
The altercation happened after Sri Lanka A sealed a thrilling super over win against India A in Dambulla on Monday, June 15.
The SL-A players were seen sledging Vaibhav and Suryansh Shedge, who were heading back to the dressing room. The Indian batters confronted the Sri Lankan players, leading to a heated altercation on the field that also involved pushing.
Vaibhav, Tilak recommended heavy sanctions
According to Sportstar, match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash “recommended fines amounting to 50 per cent of their match fees” for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sri Lanka’s Vishen Halambage, while India A captain Tilak Varma faces a “proposed 30 per cent sanction” following the incident.
Additionally, SL-A wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella was also recommended a 20 per cent fine.
In international cricket, disciplinary action is typically enforced by the ICC. However, when A‑team fixtures are involved, the match referee instead relays their recommended sanctions to the respective boards, in this case, the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket.
It is then up to the boards to decide whether they implement the recommendations.
SLC imposes sanctions on players involved in scuffle
As reported earlier, SLC had imposed sanctions on Halambage. Dickwella was also penalised despite being the peacemaker during the scuffle. It is understood that the sanction was for a different reason, though the reason remains unclear.
While Sri Lanka reprimanded its players, it is yet to be seen whether BCCI will follow suit and impose the recommended sanctions on Vaibhav and Tilak.
India A have reached the tri-series final after defeating Afghanistan A by 101 runs. The summit clash will take place on Sunday, June 21, and their opponents are yet to be determined.
