
High Commissioner of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives, Isabelle Martin said that the Canadian Government is providing full support for efforts aimed at eradicating rural poverty and empowering low-income families in Sri Lanka.
This was stated during an official meeting held yesterday (18) between Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Dr. Upali Pannila and the Canadian High Commissioner.
During the discussion, the High Commissioner appreciated the measures taken by the government to stabilize the economy of Sri Lanka and promote a corruption-free governance culture in the country.
She also commended the steps taken to address public needs in the face of challenges such as Cyclone Ditwah and the crisis in the Middle East.
Minister Pannila briefed the High Commissioner on the national poverty eradication programme “Praja Shakthi,” and the Canadian High Commissioner stated that assistance would be provided to its successful implementation.
The two sides also focused on strengthening social security programmes for elderly persons and persons with disabilities.
The Canadian High Commissioner also agreed to provide necessary technical assistance for rural development and social security initiatives.
Officials from the Canadian High Commission and the Ministry officials, including the Secretary to the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, Sampath Mantrinayake, were also present at the event.
