Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake has stated that if global fuel prices remain at their current levels, the benefits could be passed on to the public by August or September.
The Minister emphasized that the government has no intention of generating profits from fuel sales.
Commenting further on the current situation, he noted that the government is already providing a subsidy of approximately Rs. 100 per litre of diesel and around Rs. 20 per litre of petrol for the benefit of the public.
He also pointed out that fuel procurement cannot be carried out immediately, as is the case with purchasing goods from a regular market. Instead, fuel must be acquired at agreed prices through proper tender procedures, he added.
