
An unknown individual has broken into the Moragahahena Sub-Post Office and stolen Rs. 474,000 after forcing open a safe, police said.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the cash had been brought to the office for the payment of elder’s allowance beneficiaries.
The incident is reported to have occurred on Friday night (19). The postmaster, who arrived at the office last morning, discovered that the door lock had been broken and immediately lodged a complaint with police.
Officers from Moragahahena Police launched investigations after visiting the scene. Police said the sub-post office is located in a secluded forested area close to the town bus stand, and believe the suspect gained entry before breaking open the safe and stealing the cash.
Police have launched investigations into the incident.
