Public warned over impersonators posing as PHIs and demanding money

The Public Health Inspectors’ Union of Sri Lanka has warned the public about a growing number of incidents reported across the country involving individuals posing as Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) to obtain money fraudulently.

In a statement, the association said that numerous cases have been reported in which individuals have misled people at various institutions and private residences and collected money unlawfully.

The association noted that these incidents are often linked to inspections carried out in relation to the current dengue outbreak, with fraudsters reportedly using legal action related to dengue prevention and household inspections as a pretext to demand payments.

The Public Health Inspectors’ Union emphasized that PHIs do not charge or collect money under any circumstances while carrying out their official duties.

Accordingly, the public has been urged not to make any payments to anyone claiming to be a Public Health Inspector or acting under that designation.

The association further advised that if any individual identifies themselves as a PHI and requests money in connection with official duties, the matter should be immediately reported to the police and the relevant authorities.
