Steps are underway to implement a single, standardized preschool education system across all nine provinces by 2027, according to the Minister of Women and Child Affairs, Saroja Savithri Paulraj.
The Minister made the remarks while addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Early Childhood Education Development Programme.
Minister Paulraj emphasized that early childhood education should operate in alignment with the country’s broader education system, noting that the Ministry of Education should also play a key role in its development and oversight.
She further highlighted that preschool education in Sri Lanka currently remains largely unregulated and has not yet been formally established as a state-run service.
Minister Paulraj also pointed out the absence of a structured recruitment process for preschool teachers, as well as the lack of a dedicated authority or ministry responsible for monitoring and regulating the sector.
