The Chief Justice, Preethi Padman Surasena has emphasized that becoming a professional is a challenging journey and that success in a profession should not be measured solely by financial gain.
The Chief Justice made these remarks while addressing the official oath-taking ceremony for newly admitted lawyers held at the Supreme Court today (22).
Extending his congratulations to the new entrants to the legal profession, the Chief Justice noted that professional success is primarily determined by the knowledge gained through practice and the quality of service provided to clients.
He reminded that all lawyers sworn in today are officially recognized as officers of the court, adding that the judiciary places trust in the arguments and representations they present.
The Chief Justice further highlighted that the law clearly requires only individuals of good character, competence and reputation to be admitted to the legal profession.
He stressed that maintaining a high standard of professionalism is a continuing responsibility for all lawyers, expressing hope that the newly sworn-in attorneys will uphold and protect the standards of the legal profession in the long term.
The Chief Justice also underscored the importance of integrity in both professional and personal life, stating that the dignity of the legal profession is ultimately reflected in the conduct of its practitioners.
