Treasury Secretary, CBSL Governor summoned as COPF probes $2.5 million cyber theft

The Committee on Public Finance (COPF) is scheduled to reconvene today (23) to examine the disappearance of US$2.5 million in funds belonging to the Treasury allegedly due to theft by cyber criminals.

The meeting will be chaired by COPF Chairman and Member of Parliament, Dr. Harsha de Silva.

Treasury Secretary Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma and Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe have also been summoned to appear before the committee.

Commenting on the matter, committee member MP Ravi Karunanayake stated that both the Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance have submitted reports regarding the alleged US$2.5 million cyber theft.

“The Ministry of Finance submitted its report about a week ago, while the Central Bank submitted its report four or five days ago. Today’s meeting, scheduled for 2.00 p.m., aims to discuss the issue and determine where the discrepancies or problems occurred. The Treasury Secretary, relevant officials from the Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank Governor, and the necessary Central Bank officials have all been informed to arrive at the Parliament today,” he said.

The committee is expected to review the reports and seek clarification regarding the circumstances surrounding the missing funds.
