Speaker adjourns Parliament for 10 minutes amid heated situation in House

The Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne adjourned parliamentary proceedings for 10 minutes following a tense situation that arose in the House after the ruling party turned down the oppositions’ request for a special debate.
Around twenty Opposition Members of Parliament stood up and requested an emergency parliamentary debate from the Speaker, to address the alleged structural issues that have emerged within the judicial sector and provide appropriate solutions.
Accordingly, when the Speaker inquired from the Government benches regarding the matter, Leader of the House, Minister Bimal Rathnayake, stated that they did not agree to the request but were willing to hold a vote on the matter if required.
