Four people, including a 16-year-old motorcyclist and a female pedestrian, have been killed in separate road accidents reported in Polonnaruwa, Ambanpola, Piliyandala and Ingiriya, Police said.

In Polonnaruwa, a 29-year-old motorcyclist from Siripura had died after two motorcycles collided while one of the riders was attempting to overtake a lorry on the Polonnaruwa–Hingurakgoda Road.

Following the initial collision, one of the motorcycles had also struck the lorry.

Both riders had sustained injuries and were admitted to the Polonnaruwa Hospital, where the 29-year-old later succumbed to his injuries, police said.

The driver of the lorry has been arrested, and Polonnaruwa Police are conducting further investigations.

In a separate incident in the Ambanpola Police Division, a 45-year-old woman from Kasikote died after a motorcycle struck her and a child on the Kasikote Junction–Pilla Road.

The motorcyclist, the woman and the child sustained injuries and were admitted to the Galgamuwa Hospital. The woman later had succumbed to her injuries, according to Police.

Ambanpola Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.

Meanwhile, in Piliyandala, a 16-year-old motorcyclist was killed after his motorcycle collided head-on with another motorcycle while attempting to overtake a three-wheeler on the Dolekanatta–Arawwala Road in the Makuluduwa area.

Following the collision, the motorcycle had crashed into an electricity pole. The pillion passenger sustained injuries and was transferred to the Kalubowila Hospital for further treatment.

The rider of the other motorcycle had fled the scene, and Piliyandala Police have launched an investigation to arrest the suspect.

In another incident in the Ingiriya Police Division, a 61-year-old resident of Dombagaskanda died after being struck by a lorry that reportedly veered off the Ingiriya–Horana Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The lorry subsequently had plunged down an embankment and crashed into a nearby house. Both the pedestrian and the lorry driver sustained injuries and were admitted to the Ingiriya Hospital, where the pedestrian later succumbed to his injuries.

Ingiriya Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
