Trailblazing mountaineer Johann Peries summits Mount Denali on third attempt, completes sixth of Seven Summits

Sri Lanka's trailblazing mountaineer Johann Peries has successfully summited Mount Denali, North America's highest peak, completing one of the most challenging milestones in his quest to conquer the legendary Seven Summits.

Peries reached the 6,190-metre summit at 7:35 p.m. on June 17, 2026, succeeding on his third attempt after two previous expeditions were thwarted by extreme weather and harsh mountain conditions.

His latest ascent came during one of Denali's most demanding climbing seasons in recent years, marked by severe weather, multiple high-altitude rescue operations and five fatalities, including a climbing ranger killed in the line of duty.

During the expedition, Peries endured frostbite to three fingers, survived a 30-foot fall and suffered significant foot injuries before successfully reaching the summit with his team.

Widely recognised as the first and only Sri Lankan to undertake the Seven Summits challenge, Peries has spent more than a decade pursuing the highest mountain on each continent. With the successful ascent of Denali, he has now climbed six of the world's seven continental high points, leaving only Aconcagua in South America to complete the challenge.

Peries had previously demonstrated similar resilience on Mount Everest, where an oxygen equipment failure forced him to turn back just 400 metres below the summit in 2016 before he returned to successfully reach the top in 2018.

His successful ascent of Denali marks the completion of one of the most elusive chapters of his mountaineering journey and stands as a testament to perseverance in the face of repeated setbacks.
