The Court of Appeal has ordered that a petition filed seeking an order to revoke the parliamentary membership of Jaffna District MP Ramanathan Archchuna be taken up for hearing on August 31.
The petition filed by Chairman of ‘Abhinawa Niwahal Peramuna’, Oshala Herath, was taken up before the Appeals Court Justice Mahen Gopallawa today (02).
During the proceedings, the legal counsel appearing for the petitioner, presented facts before the court and requested that an early date be given for the hearing of the petition, while Attorney-at-Law appearing for the respondent MP Archchuna, raised no objection to the request, Ada Derana reporter said.
Accordingly, the court has fixed the hearing of the relevant petition for August 31.
The petition contends that MP Ramanathan Archchuna had been serving as a government medical officer at the time of his election as a Member of Parliament, and argues that, under the provisions of the Constitution, a government servant is disqualified from being elected as a Member of Parliament, and also that it is against the law.
