The number of individuals injured in the renewed unrest at Negombo Prison has risen further.

According to reports, nearly 25 persons have been injured in the latest incident, and steps are currently underway to admit them to the Negombo District General Hospital.

Meanwhile, police have reportedly fired several gun shots in an attempt to bring the situation under control.

A tense situation was reported once again at Negombo Prison this morning, said Ada Derana reporter.

Additional police teams have been deployed to the prison to restore order.

Although the situation had been brought under control by this morning following yesterday’s incidents, unrest has reportedly resurfaced at the prison.

A clash broke out between two groups of inmates at Negombo Prison yesterday around 1.00 p.m.

Police stated that the confrontation occurred between a group of remand prisoners and a group of convicted inmates serving sentences.

Two inmates were killed in the clash, while 38 others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at hospital.
