The Attorney General today (06) requested the Court of Appeal to refer to the Supreme Court the writ petition filed by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa seeking an order preventing his arrest in connection with investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.
When the petition was taken up for consideration today, Deputy Solicitor General Suharshi Herath, appearing on behalf of the respondents, submitted that the reliefs sought by the petitioner relate to fundamental rights and, therefore, fall outside the jurisdiction of the Court of Appeal.
Accordingly, she requested the court to issue an order referring the petition to the Supreme Court, said Ada Derana reporter.
During the proceedings, President's Counsel Romesh de Silva, appearing on behalf of the petitioner, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, concluded his oral submissions.
The case was postponed until July 9 for further submissions.
