
The remains of Prison Guard M.G. Upali, the eighth prison officer to die following the recent unrest at the Negombo Prison, is scheduled to be taken to his residence in Kamburupitiya today (09).
The 42-year-old prison guard succumbed to his injuries yesterday while receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital. He had been critically injured after being assaulted by inmates during the prison unrest while on duty.
Upali had joined the Department of Prisons five years ago after completing 12 years of service in the Sri Lanka Navy. He is survived by his wife and two sons, aged six and nine.
Meanwhile, Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara visited the residence of Prison Guard S.D.S. Abeywardena in Kurunegala, this morning to pay his last respects.
The final rites of several prison officers who lost their lives in the Negombo Prison unrest, including Prison Jailor S.H.S. Chandrawansa, are scheduled to be held later today.
A total of 28 individuals died in the Negombo Prison unrest including eight prison officers. Over 100 persons also sustained injuries.
