A team of Sri Lankan doctors has successfully separated twin girls who were conjoined at the pelvis in a highly complex surgery, marking a landmark achievement in the country's medical history.
The achievement was made possible through the joint efforts of the Teaching Hospital Peradeniya, the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Specialized Children's Hospital in Peradeniya, and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Peradeniya.
The twins, Linuli Tharulya and Lithuli Manulya, were born in 2021 in the Aranayake area of Mawanella as conjoined twins joined at the pelvis, a rare and highly complex congenital condition.
For more than five years, specialists from the three institutions had carried out extensive medical evaluations, multiple procedures, and careful planning in preparation for the final surgery.
The surgery, performed on June 10, successfully separated the twins, enabling them to live normal, healthy lives after being conjoined since birth.
