
The Chairman of the Pathahewaheta Pradeshiya Sabha, who had been evading arrest after being convicted of bribery charges and sentenced to imprisonment by court, has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
The court had previously sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of the relevant offence.
Following the conviction, the Chairman had fled his residence in Marassana, Kandy, and remained in hiding.
Acting on information received, officers of the Bribery Commission arrested the suspect yesterday (9) in the Kirillawala, Imbulgoda area.
During questioning after his arrest, the suspect reportedly stated that he had been changing his place of residence frequently and remaining in hiding based on advice he had received from the police.
The arrested suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (10).
