Legal action has been taken against 13 homeowners after a special dengue control programme carried out in the Wattala area found mosquito breeding sites and larvae on their premises.

During the operation, public health officials had inspected 375 houses and identified multiple locations where dengue mosquitoes could breed, including 13 properties with mosquito larvae.

Health authorities said Gampaha District is currently experiencing a high-risk dengue situation and accounts for the second-highest number of dengue cases reported in Sri Lanka, representing more than 18% of the country's total infections.

A significant proportion of these cases have been reported from the Biyagama, Kelaniya and Wattala areas.

As mosquito larvae have been detected in several residential premises within the Wattala Divisional Secretariat Division, health authorities have stepped up enforcement measures in the area, including issuing "red notices" and increasing fines against property owners who fail to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
