Magistrate Pasan Amarasena has reportedly resigned from the position of President of the Judicial Service Association, which represents the country's Magistrates and District Judges.

The resignation is reported to have followed a controversy surrounding a special general assembly meeting of the Judicial Service Association convened today (11) by its Secretary.

Reports indicate that the Executive Committee of the association decided to hold the special general assembly meeting at the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court premises to obtain the views of its members regarding the currently debated issue of extending the retirement age of judges.

A letter allegedly issued by Judicial Service Association President Pasan Amarasena, informing members of his resignation and outlining the reasons for his decision, is currently circulating on social media.

Meanwhile, another letter allegedly issued by the Secretary of the association, Judge Suranga Munasinghe, refuting the allegations made by the President, is also being circulated on social media.

In the said letter, the Secretary has informed members that the special general assembly meeting of the association would be held today as scheduled.

Accordingly, it is reported that the special general assembly meeting convened by the Judicial Service Association commenced at around 10:00 a.m. today at the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court premises.
