
An Ambalangoda Pradeshiya Sabha member representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has been arrested by the Galle District Crime Division for the alleged illegal possession of a repeater-type firearm, said police.
Investigations have commenced to determine how the local councillor had acquired the firearm, said Ada Derana reporter.
Authorities are also examining whether the weapon had been used in any criminal activities.
Further investigations into the incident are being carried out under the direction of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) in charge of the Southern Province, Kithsiri Jayalath, and the Director of the Galle District Crime Division, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Namal Perera.
