Sri Lanka Police have urged the public to immediately report to the nearest police station any text message (SMS) received falsely claiming to be sent from the Police Traffic Division, instructing recipients to pay traffic fines.
Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Traffic and Road Safety Range, W.P.J. Senadheera, stated that the Police does not issue such SMS messages requesting motorists to pay traffic fines.
He said the public may receive fraudulent messages via SMS, WhatsApp or other platforms falsely claim to have been sent by the Police Traffic Division, directing recipients to pay alleged traffic fines within a week by clicking a web link provided in the message.
DIG Senadheera stressed that these messages are completely fake and urged the public not to click on the links or provide any personal or banking information to the sender.
He further advised anyone who receives such fraudulent messages to immediately inform the nearest police station, reiterating that the Police Traffic Division does not send such SMS notifications requesting payment of traffic fines.
