The construction industry is a reflection of a country's economic activity as well as an expression of its national identity, leader of the Sarvajana Balaya, Member of Parliament Dilith Jayaweera stated.

MP Jayaweera made the remarks while addressing the 14th World Construction Symposium, which was held in Colombo alongside the Sustainability Award 2026 ceremony, where he attended as the Chief Guest.

MP Jayaweera said Sri Lanka's construction industry deserves recognition for its contribution to the country, adding that sustainability has always been part of the nation's identity and way of life.

He said Sri Lanka had long aspired to become a stakeholder in sustainable construction but had been unable to fully realize that goal due to limitations in infrastructure, financial capacity and resources.

Expressing confidence in the country's future, Parliamentarian Jayaweera said Sri Lanka would have the opportunity to demonstrate not only its creativity but also its commitment to protecting the environment, preserving national values and advancing the principles of sustainability through the construction sector.

Reflecting on his previous address to the construction industry in 2021, Sarvajana Balaya leader Jayaweera said he had faced criticism after attempting to predict the country's economic outlook, adding that he would refrain from making similar forecasts now because he is officially a politician.
