More details have emerged regarding the suspect who allegedly scuffled and snatched a police officer’s service pistol, shot another policeman with it and then escaped on a motorcycle in Katunayake Police Division last evening (15).

The information was revealed during interrogation following the suspect's arrest last night.

Several police teams launched a special operation to apprehend the suspect. Officers attached to the Negombo Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau arrested him in the Divulapitiya area, where he was found in possession of 31 grams of Crystal Methamphetamine ("Ice").

Police also had recovered the stolen firearm belonging to the police officer and the motorcycle that had been stolen by the suspect.

The arrested suspect has been identified as a 41-year-old resident of Divulapitiya, police said.

Investigations have revealed that he had previously served with the Civil Defence Force, attached to the Katunayake Security Unit, from 2008 to 2010.

The police officer who sustained gunshot injuries has been admitted to the Negombo Hospital, while the officer injured in the assault has been admitted to the Minuwangoda Hospital.

Police have launched further investigations to arrest another suspect believed to be involved in the incident.
