Prof. Sarath Abayakoon says he is yet to receive any response from President Anura Kumara Dissanayake with regard to the letter informing of his decision to resign as the Governor of the Central Province.
Speaking at a media briefing held in Kandy today (17), Abayakoon said he had informed the President, at the time of accepting the post, that he intended to step down after serving for only a short period.
However, he explained that he had postponed his resignation due to the extensive damage caused in the Central Province by the recent adverse weather associated with Cyclone Ditwah.
The Governor further stated that his decision to resign was based solely on a highly personal reason and that no individual or party had exerted any pressure on him to do so.
Accordingly, Prof. Abayakoon said he had informed the President that his resignation from the post of Governor would take effect from July 21, 2026.
